We all get excited for Memorial Day.

It’s the start of summer, an extra day off for some, a time to get together with family and friends.

Just like other holidays, sometimes the meaning gets lost.

Memorial Day is a day to remember those men and women who died serving in the U.S. Armed Force.

I always make sure to honor those who passed while serving our country as well as just having some lighthearted fun.

Frugal Living: Have a Meaningful and Fun Memorial Day

1. Discuss the meaning of the holiday.

(Have everyone bring one fact or if you are hosting, look facts up on the internet and make each guest read one at your gathering.)

2. Attend a parade, put up a flag, or visit a cemetery.

(Remember those who gave their lives in the U.S. Armed Forces and do something for veterans that are alive as well.)

3. Do something nice for a veteran you know.

(Take them to a restaurant this weekend. After reading researched shared on a blog post from HullFinancialPlanning. com, I learned that  combat veterans are between 14-18% less likely to hold equities as their non-combat commrades. If you know a veteran well enough, remind them to check in with a financial planner. )

4. Have a progressive barbecue.

( Get together with neighbors and go from house to house for different courses.)

5. Take advantage of the sales.

If a bargain is in your budget, go shopping.

6. Have friends over.

(Avoid spending too much this weekend.)

7. Go visit and stay with friends.

( Just spend on food and gas.)

8. Kick off the start of summer by biking.

(Consider biking to work or even challenging yourself to enter a race.)

9. Start looking for deals on LivingSocial or Groupon and plan your summer.

(Plan how you will use your time off this weekend and for future days off.)

10. Make t-shirts.

(Design a t-shirt for a veteran. Get a jump on making dad, daddy enthusiasts, boy grads, girl grads or someone special a t-shirt.
